Today it is the State of Rheinland-Pfatlz, Germany, on the lower SW Edge of the Country: Emmigrant's Surname:BERKEL Emmigrant's given name:Jacob Ship's Name: a "Pink" The Mary : Arrival date:29 Sep 1733 : Port: Philadelphia, PA: Place of origin: Rotterdam, Holland, The Netherlands (The Palatinate later The Rhineland-Pfatlz, Germany) Note:Jacob Berkel and family moved to the Lebanon/Lancaster Co.,PA area. Two Berkel families: "The Mary" 1 Hans Jacobs, and wife, Anna Barbara Berkel 1 Jacob and and wife, Dorothea and daughter Magdalena Berkel. The daughter Maria Magdalena married Kramer in 1738. Jacob and Dorothea continued to have children baptized in the area. We suspect that they were younger and Hans Jacob and Anna Barbara were the parents of Jacob and Magdalena. Also on the boat were Catherina age 6 1/2 Barbara age 3, and Hans Jacob who were probably children of the young Jacob Berkel family. See Rev. John Casper Stoever records for sponsorships, etc. His spelled the name Bierckel, Birkel, Berckel and Berkel and the extract of the passenger list has Berkley. Although the handwritten list is Berkel clearly. JLB Note: The information following is from a letter received from Sharon Doliante dated January 12, 1977: "I once engaged the services of a genealogist in Europe, to try to determine the origin of the Pirtle name. He (Herr von Franck) told me that nowhere in his more than 1 million surnames, did he have anything on the name Pirtle, & suggested that this was not the original spelling. He seemed to think that it was probably Burkle or Burkel... with two little dots over the "u", & that it was either Swiss or German.. although he said the family could have lived in Alsace-Lorraine (France). He sent me the only reference he had on an immigrant (American), which he felt could have been our Michael. A Michel Burkle-Burkel (spelled both ways), arrived at the port of Philadelphia, aboard the Ship Phoenix, John Spurrier, Master, from Rotterdam, Oct. 1, 1754. Herr von Frank said that Michel Burkle's name appeared between names of known Palatinates. It's the best lead I've had, so far! But I've never found a trace of him in PA or Va. (Our Michael, who never signed anything, other than with his mark...but this may have been because he did not know English?...did have most all of his early deeds in the name of Purkle.) (Herr von Frank did say that "B" & "P" were interchangeable, in German.) Sept. 29, 1733. from Pennsylvania German Pioneers - Arrivals in Port of Philadelphia from 1727-1808 by Ralph B. Strassburger. If we are not talking about the same family is would be strange. /s/ Barbara From: Barbara Raoufi To: Date: Saturday, April 10, 1999 11:48 AM Good Morning, Jacob kept the name Berkel, spelled sometime Berkley, Barclay and end up as Barkley Later the family fixed the spelling as Barkley; one branch has the spelling as Barclay. My Great-Great-Greatfather spelled his name Barkley and his son had the spelling of Barclay. This was around the 1850's. Will copy the supplement of the Barkley book and mail you. /s/ Barbara From: JGibbsArch@aol.com To: pirtlew@bellsouth.net Date: Wednesday, April 14, 1999 10:29 AM Subject: Berkel genealogy revisited Wanda, We have corresponded in the past on the Berkels. I am trying to clean up what I see as a few loose ends. Regarding names, if you do not already know, Germans went by the second of their given names. Hans Jacob would have been known as Jacob, or in English as James -- he would not have gone by Hans, though American records might have recorded him by that name. Frequently, there were several siblings with the first name, such as Johann -- Johann or John was a very common first name associated with Christening. On the other hand, though they had different first names, Hans Jacob and his son Johann Jacob would both have gone by the same given name of Jacob/James. So we need to be careful here. I have generally found that census records give the person's commonly used names, that is, that both son and father in our case would show up as Jacob Berkel (or with some other variant of the last name). Our father and son should be expected to appear on records in America as Jacob or James Berkel, not Hans or John/Johann. You state that Hans Jacob settled in the "Swatara Creek Valley westward past Williamstown (later called Jones Town)". In my atlas, I find Jonestown (spelled as one word today) on the Swatara Creek in Lebanon County. I find Williamstown northeast of Jonestown in Dauphin County. Was there another Williamstown, which was later renamed Jonetown/Jones Town, which you are referring to? Also, do you mean that Hans Jacob settled on the Swatara, or do you mean that his son Johann Jacob settled there? (You also suggest that the Hans Jacob might be the James who was in Chester County, and you state that son Johann Jacob settled in Derry Twp., Dauphin County). It seems to me that the father Hans Jacob, who would have been in his fifties when he came to America with his grown son and daughter-in-law, would very likely have lived with his son in America. Either Hans Jacob or Johann Jacob could thus be considered head of the household, and either would show up by the same name as Jacob/James. Where is Derry Twp.? -- I cannot find it Dauphin, Lancaster, or Lebanon Counties in my atlas. Did the family first settle in Chester County, then remove to Jonestown, and later remove again to Derry, which if it is in Dauphin County, would have been still further inland? Did son Johann Jacob perhaps move to Derry only after his father Hans Jacob died? Did the elder Hans Jacob remain in Chester County, leaving it to son Johann Jacob to move on to Jones Town and then Derry? Or, as you suggest, was the James Berkel of Chester County simply a different person than either of our two Jacobs? You show Michael Leonhardt Berkel as being born in SC -- how can that be? He could very well have moved there as a young man, but Michael had younger siblings who were born back in PA, and it seems that his parents lived their lives out in PA. Also, if that was his full name, Michael would have been known as Leon in America. If you have records referring to Michael Berkel in SC, I would suspect that he is not the same person. My wife is a direct descendant of Johann Jacob's sister Maria Magdalena, who married Andreas Kramer, so you and she share a common ancestor in Hans Jacob Berkel. You show that Magdalena & Andreas married in "Lutheran Church, Lancaster County" -- do you know what town that Lutheran Church was in? I can confirm that Magdalena & Andreas' son Philip Kramer was born in Manheim, Lancaster County -- is that perhaps where his parents were also married? Today, Manheim is not that far from Jonestown, a drive of about 17 miles on Route 72 -- my guess is that Rte 17 is an old road that connected Jonestown and Manheim way back then. My main interest is thus in confirming what happened to Hans Jacob, and what his own background was. I have found online that he may have been from the town of Pheddersheim in the Rhenish (Lower) Palatinate. I show Hans Jacob's wife as Anna Barbara, based solely on sources such as yours. I have no primary records on any of these early Berkels, and indeed most of my info comes from yourself, which is why I ask the above questions. Most of my very early Kramer data comes from Sheila Kratze, with whom you have also corresponded in the past. Thanks, JIM GIBBS John Purtle, b.1725 in Ireland, died 1809 who married Charity Dibbs, see letter above..we have contradictory info on this man. We are not sure if he is the son of Jacob or James, but several researchers have indicated Jacob changed his name to James Purtle and married a woman in a Quaker ceremony.
