128. William Sparkman Captain

The will of William Sparkman was written in October 1782 and proven in May Court of 1785. (See below.)
The 1790 North Carolina Heads of Family census gives the following Sparkman males. The first number is the number of free white males of 16 years or older, the second number is the number of free white males under 16 years of age, the third number is the number of free white females including heads of household, the fourth number is all other free persons, and the fifth number is the number of slaves in the household. All the following were in Bertie Co., North Carolina.

SPARKMAN, WILLIAM 1 1 3 __ ___
SPARKMAN, RED WM. 1 1 2 __ 2
SPARKMAN, JAMES 1 __ __ __ __
SPARKMAN, EDWARD 1 3 3 __ __

Evidence of military service is found in theNorth Carolina Records Volume 22 page 356. A list of men commanded by Captain Charles King. The roll call was taken on November 25th and include the following:

Thomas Sparkman
James Sparkman
William Sparkman
John Sparkman

According to the book, "The Sparkman Family" by Amelia Sparkman Castleberry published in 1938, William Sparkman, son of John Sparkman, Sr. of Chowan County North Carolina was in Bertie Countie North Carolina in 1735.

On July third, 1755, William Sparkman received a grant of 132 acres in Bertie County, North Carolina "on the North Side of Roquist Swamp". Land grant Book Number 11, page 40, file number 763.

On February 14th, 1761, William Sparkman received another grant of 470 acres in Bertie County North Carolina on "Barbecue Swamp" Land Grant Number 11, page 41, File Number 768.

These copies of grants were secured from the Secretary of State Thad Eure, Raleigh North Carolina.

There is little doubt that this is the William Sparkman who served in the Colonial Army under Captain Charles King.

The Roster of North Carolina soldiers in the American Revolutionary War page 291 #2880 there is a grant for Military Service in the American Revolution of 640 acres of land in Tennessee County, Tennessee was made out to the heirs of William Sparkman. The deed was not delivered until September 30, 1785 (four months after William died.)

According to the "History of Texas", Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, page 422 there is a reference to William Sparkman being a volunteer in the Revolutionary War serving under Colonel William Polk. After the close of the struggle, he moved with his family to Williamson county, Tennessee. While there he enlisted for service in the War of 1812, took part of the Battle of Canebrake with Jackson's Army. He was captured there and held as prisoner of war until peace was declared. William Sparkman continued to reside in Tennessee until his death.

Here is the actual will transcribed from the orignal document found in Bertie County N.C. Records in Courthouse, Windsor N.C.:

DEEDS:SC:1795:PURTLE/BERKEL:Greenville Co:Sold the 640 tract, Barbara signed her name as Barbara Berkel. Michael signed by his mark like a right leaning capital "B" , as Michael Purtle. Some researchers have transcribed our Michael Pirtle as having the middle initial "B" but we believe this is in error. He signed by mark, and instead of signing with the usual "X," in the original we have examined, his mark was more often made thus: 'B' We believe his mark, which is quite clearly so in the records, was mistaken for a middle initial. For this reason we of the TN Branch do not accept the middle initial for this branch's Michael Pirtle. BOOKS:"Descendants of Michael B. Purtle" by Buckley, James Leo, Jr: The area the Pirtle's lived in became Livingston Co. in 1798 (they were in the Livingston Co. tax list for 1800), and in 1809 Caldwell Co. was cut off from Livingston Co. (They were in the 1810 Census for Caldwell Co.). Michael Pirtle died January 7, 1820; about 85 years of age, and he left a will which was recorded. The Pirtle's of Hardeman Co., Tenn., are descendants of Michael Pirtle. Michael Pirtle and his sons, Jacob and Martin Pirtle, were listed in the First U.S. Census 1790, Ninety Six District, Greenville Co., S.C. We know that the Michael Pirtle family lived in South Carolina as early as 1771 because Michael Pirtle, Jr. (1771-1850) always gave his place of birth as South Carolina. For reasons unknown Michael Purtle and his family, although buying and selling several tracts of land in South Carolina which we have records of (in 1784 Michael Pirtle owned 400 acres and a grist mill on the Reedy River near Ninety Six, S.C.) were awarded South of Green River Grants in Kentucky (1,000 acres). So, in 1797 Michael Pirtle's family sold their property in South Carolina and moved to their new home in Western Kentucky. How they traveled from Greenville Co., S.C. to Christian Co., Ky., is not known. Besides Michael Pirtle (his wife, Barbara, had died in 1796), his sons, Jacob, Martin, Peter, Michael, Jr., and daughter, Margaret (John Cammack), moved also. It has not been definitely established if Thomas Purtle was related to the James Purtle of Chester Co., Pa., whose son, Nicholas Purtle, married Elizabeth Thompson on June 18, 1755, in a Quaker ceremony; or the George and Henry Purtle (Pirtle) who lived in Berkeley Co. and Washington Co., Va., before settling in 1796 in Washington Co., Ky.; or the John Purtle (Pirkle) of Rockingham Co., N.C.; or the ***Michael Purtle (Pirtle) who lived in Greenville Co., S.C., before settling in Christian Co., Ky. However it is believed that Samuel Pirtle, who traveled with the**** Michael Purtle family when they moved from South Carolina to Kentucky, and who lived in the ***Michael Pirtle household in Kentucky, was a nephew - the son of John Purtle (Pirkle) of Rockingham Co., N.C. Records indicate that in 1815 he moved. *** Michael Pirtle's Kentucky home was located about six miles southwest of present day Pinceton, Ky. The area the Pirtle's lived in became Livingston Co. in 1798 (they were in the Livingston Co. tax list for 1800), and in 1809 Caldwell Co. was cut off from Livingston Co. (They were in the 1810 Census for Caldwell Co.). Michael Pirtle died January 7, 1820; about 85 years of age, and he left a will which was recorded. It is interesting also to note that one of Michael B. Pirtle, Sr.'s sons was named for Peter (Partle) Pirtle, the immigrant brother of Jacob Pirtle, Sr. In the copy of Michael B. Pirtle, Sr.'s Will, you will note the last name of the sons being: Jacob Purtle, Peter Partle, Michael Pirtle, Jr., and Martin Pertle." (JLB Note: We see that there exist possible differences of opinion among the excellent researchers as to the initial entry into America and the family relationships of the early Pirtles/Purtles. The use of the name Jacob by so many of them is certainly cause for conjecture. Michael Sr.'s, wife, Barbara is definitely German based on her signature on a South Carolina deed per Brent Holcomb. Jacob is German for James and while used by the English, it seemed to fall in disfavor and James became more prevalent among the English speaking peoples. Martin's eldest son is presumed to be James as the male listed in the 1790 Greenville, S.C. census. The information shown below is an attempt to identify family members and to ferret out their relationship. Many thanks are due to many, many people who have sent me different pieces of information as well as to my wife for keeping up my interest in researching family lines, accompanying me on numerous trips to courthouses, libraries, graveyards, etc. and for spending so many hours at the microfilm reader trying to locate our relatives. While the family name has been spelled in many different ways, I will use "Purtle" since that is the name on the tombstones in the family Cemetery of Forest Hills located at Bodcaw, Arkansas). The Purtles were living in South Carolina during the latter part of the 18th century, land records support this claim. By 1800, they had moved to Livingston Co., in western KY. PURTLE-SCOTT:Biographical information provided by James L. Buckley, Jr. who lives at 416 Holshire Way, Ballwin, MO 63011 and who would appreciate any additional information about these families. The Michael Purtle and John Scott families were early settlers of Livingston County where John´s son, Walter D. Scott, was born in 1797. He married in 1821 in Caldwell County the granddaughter of Michael Purtle (whose children were Jacob, Martin, Michael, Jr., Peter and Margaret Carmack per his will dated 1820 and recorded in Caldwell County). Priscilla Scott (nee Purtle), daughter of Jacob and Polly, was born in 1796 in Greenville, SC. The Purtles came to America around 1740 from Germany and moved through the Carolinas to Kentucky about 1795. Michael´s wife, Barbara, died in Greenville, SC. Residents of Livingston Co., met in 1809 at Michael Purtle´s house where they discussed the formation of Caldwell County. John Scott was related to other Scotts living in Livingston County on Skinframe Creek (Joshua, Joseph, etc.) and to many other families (Bennett, Lamar, Vance, Delaney, Jenkins, Reed, etc.). He moved to Calloway County after 1821 and died near Palma where his son, John T. Scott, resided. Walter and Priscilla with Jacob Purtle and other members of his family moved to Hardeman County in Tennessee in 1821 near Bolivar on the Hatchee River. Jacob was one of the county commissioners there. Walter Scott and some of the Purtles relocated in 1833 to Dallas (near Mena) in Arkansas and subsequently in 1851 to Bodcaw, AR (near Hope) where they are buried at the Forest Hill Cemetery. Peter Purtle moved to Hopkinsville where he raised a family. Michael Purtle, Jr. moved to Alabama about 1821 and subsequently rejoined portions of the family in Ouchita Co., AR about 1850. Walter´s son, Jenkins M. Scott, married Catherine Jane Brumley at Mena, AR and was killed at the battle of Champions Hill in Mississippi which preceded the siege of Vicksburg. His son, William Walter Scott, died in 1932 at Bolivar, TX where he is buried at Rosilie Cemetery. His daughter, Ida Delaney Scott, and her daughter, Dove Russell Buckley, are buried at Idabel, OK. Submitted by James L. Buckley, Jr. There were two other known brothers of Michael Purtle, Sr.----- John Purtle, b.1725 in Ireland, died 1809 who married Charity Dibbs, and Nicholas Purtle born 1737 in Ireland who married Elizabeth Thompson on June 18,1755. Michael Purtle, Sr. was born 1735 Cork County, Ireland and died 1820 in Caldwell County, Kentucky. Michael Purtle's wife, Barbara _____ is believed to have died in the home of her daughter, Mrs. John [Margarett Purtle] Cammack in Laurens County, South Carolina.
