Ancestors of Rodney Sparkman Sr.

Notes

64. Edward Sparkman

This family had land grants in the western portion of North Carolina in what was known as the "Tanasive Territory" and is now known as the Great Smokie Mountain Park. There is a family bible in the "Christis Garden" museum just outside of Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The Bertie County Tax lists show the following Sparkmans':

1788 In one household
EDWARD SPARKMAN
GEORGE SPARKMAN, son of Edward
WILLIAM SPARKMAN, ORPHAN, brother of Edward
THOMAS SPARKMAN, brother of Edward

1791 In one household
WILLIAM SPARKMAN, orphan, son of Edward d. 1790
THOMAS SPARKMAN, orphan, son of Edward d. 1790
GEORGE SPARKMAN
WILLIAM SPARKMAN

Now some background information which was obtained by Sparkman descendants from Dr. C. C. Miller, Jr. of Natchez, Mississippi.
"In 1835 a bunch of the Sparkman's in White Co., Tennessee granted power of attorney to Aquilla Todd of Grainger County, Tennessee to help them get their share of their Uncle Edward's estate-in Bertie Co., N. C.".....the following year a bunch of other Sparkmans' followed suit...interestinly enough the following people were the ones who wanted thier "Uncle Edward's" estate
In 1835 they were
JOHN "JACKIE" SPARKMAN, son of James
GEORGE SPARKMAN, JR or II, son of George b. 1765
SOLOMON SPARKMAN, son of George b. 1765
LEWIS SPARKMAN son of George b. 1765
BRYANT SPARKMAN (Thomas Bryant b. 1803), son of George b. 1765
WILLIAM SPARKMAN, son of George b. 1765
MICAJAH SIMMONS & NANCY, son-in-law & daughter of George b. 1765
DRURY SIMMONS & TABITHA, son-in-law & daughter of George b. 1765
FRANCIS SIMMONS & MARTHA, son-in-law & daughter of George b.1765

It is a pretty well known fact that George b. 1765, James, Thomas, etc. are descended from Edward Sparkman who died in 1790. In fact, Captain William Sparkman mentions both Edward and his son Edward in his will which is dated 1782 and proven in 1785.

Thomas Jones Hardeman. By the act which created it this county was directed to have the first sessions of its courts held at the house of Thomas McNeil. On October 17, 1823, the county was organized by the following named commissioners: Andrew Taylor, Wm. Polk, Jacob Pirtle, Jno. Y. Cochran, Wm. P. Robertson, Nathan Stell, and John Rosson. Wm. Polk was chosen chairman and Thos. Hardeman, clerk and J. C. N. Robertson, sheriff of the first Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions. Settlements began in 1819, but the first notable settlement was made in 1821 by Col. Ezekiel Polk, grandfather of President James K. Polk, William Polk, son of Col. Ezekiel Polk, Thomas McNeal, son-in-law of Col. Ezekiel Polk, Thomas J. Hardeman and his grandson, Rufus P. Neely. The committee appointed to select the county seat was composed of Abram Maury, Wm. Hall, James Fentress and Benj. Reynolds. They selected a site one mile north of the present location, and Maj. Wm. Ramsey donated twenty-six acres for the site. The county seat was at first called Hatchie, but in 1824 the present site was selected and was called Bolivar in honor of Simon Bolivar, the patriot and liberator of Venezuela. Major Ramsey and Colonel Polk gave fifty acres for the new town site. The first teacher in the county was, perhaps, Henry Thompson. Early papers were the Palladium, The Sentinel, and Free Press. Bolivar is the home of the Western Hospital for the Insane. Statistics of Hardeman County: Population of 1920, 22,278. Assessed valuation of taxable property, 1921, $9,282,472. Area, 640 square miles. Number of farms, 3,535. Railway mileage, 95. Borders on Mississippi and drained by the Big Hatchie. Its surface is nearly level and in sections covered with fine timber. Soil fertile, and it is one of the best cotton producing counties. Other staples are corn and hay. Traversed by Illinois Central, Southern, and N. C. & St. L. Railroads. Bolivar, the county seat, is on the I. C. 18 miles south of Jackson, and has a population of 1,031, with good schools and churches, weekly newspapers, two banks, and manufacturing and commercial establishments. Scholastic population of county, 8,414; high schools, 6; elementary schools, 104. (4)-) Part 1, p. 386. "Descendants of Michael B. Purtle" by Buckley, James Leo, Jr:Jacob Pirtle built his home (mounds of where the chimneys stood were evident at the turn of the century) by a wonderful spring in the vicinity near where Tennessee Highway 100 now crosses the Hatchie River - about four miles west of Toone. By 1823 there were enough residents in the district that a petition was sent to the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee at Murfreesboro to organize a county. Among the signers of this petition were Jacob Pirtle and his sons, William C., Benjamin W. and Robert Pirtle. Jacob Pirtle served on the Commission that established the county when it was organized from Hardin Co. on Oct. 17, 1823, and he was a member of the first Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions held on Nov. 17, 1823. He served on the court for many years. He also served on the first jury in the county. Jacob Pirtle died in 1837 (his wife, Mary called "Polly", had died in Kentucky) and was buried on his 190 acre tract of land on the high hill at the mouth of Gin Creek and the Hatchie River (these bluffs along the Hatchie River were known as Pirtle's Bluffs in steam boating days). He also owned another tract of land on Short Creek on the south side of the Hatchie River. His will was recorded. [JLB Note: Polly Purtle gave mother's consent on Feb. 27, 1821 for the marriage of their daughter Priscilla to Walter D. Scott in Caldwell Co., Ky. "Descendants of Michael B. Purtle" by Buckley, James Leo, Jr:In 1833 two of Jacob Pirtle's sons, Benjamin W. Pirtle (by 1840 he lived in Red River Co., Texas) and two daughters, Priscilla (she married Walter Scott) and Mary M. (she married Isaac Jones) moved to Western Arkansas (the Dallas, Ark., area) with James Pirtle (son of Martin Pirtle). Jacob Pirtle's youngest son ,Isaac Pirtle, (he married Eunice Cunningham) also moved there by 1836, but he later lived in Ouachita Co., Ark., and then moved on to Lamar Co., Texas, where he died in 1875. The residence of Jacob Pirtle's other two daughters, Sally married ___ Gibbs) and Rebecca married ___ Boutt), is unknown. However, four of Jacob Pirtle's sons - Michael Pirtle, John B. Pirtle, William C. Pirtle and Robert Pirtle - lived out their lives in Hardeman Co., and they and their families have made significant contributions to the county. The two sons of Martin Pirtle were:James Pirtle (he married Charity Roberts), and Martin W. Pirtle (he married Martha Jane Duboise and later was a Justice of the Peace in Hardeman Co.). Tradition has it that they floated down the Tennessee (or Cumberland), Ohio and Mississippi rivers and up the Hatchie River in flat boats. Jacob Pirtle may have visited the area as early as 1819. "Goodspeed's History of Tennessee" does state that Jacob Pirtle "raised a crop of corn in 1821". And when one returns to present day Hardeman Co. to see the old homesteads, cemeteries and other places related to the family history, he will be disappointed. Even the Pirtle Cemetery, located about one-half mile south of the Bolivar- Cloverport Road and one-half mile west of Tennessee Highway 100, is now hard to find in the woods. Fortunately, the Toone Cemetery, Rainey Cemetery and Vernon Cemetery are still kept up and easily found. These are all located near Toone, Tenn., and are the resting place for many of the Hardeman Co. Pirtle's .The old Greenwood Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which was the church home to most of the Pirtle's is gone. It had moved three times through the years. The fine antebellum homes of Isacc Walter Pirtle and Robert Jackson Pirtle have been torn down. The school houses are gone. Even the roads have changed. There is little to remind you that for generations Pirtle families lived off the land in the Toone community. It is an age passed by, but for all the descendants, Hardeman Co. is where our roots are, and we are proud of our heritage."
