32. George Thomas Sparkman

George & Patsy moved from the Tanasive Territory of the Great Smokie Mountains, North Carolina to Sparkmantown, in Van Buren County, Tennessee in 1803. Of their ten children, Nancy, George, Thomas Bryant and Thomas Bryants's son Peter Rowen all lived in Van Buren County and raised large families and even today there are descendants of these children living in the area. Solomon moved to Missouri about 1854.
George Sparkman, Patriotic service during the Revoulutionary War, when he furnished supplies for the Army in Bertie Co., North Carolina.
Van Buren is just one of the ninety-five counties in the state of Tennessee. It was formed from counties that touched the borders of the county, namely White, Warren and Bledsoe and these three counties were shortened by a distance of two hundred and fifty-five miles to creat the new Van Buren County. White was the oldest of the three original counties, being formed in 1806, then Bledsoe County was formed in 1807. As one might think, Van Buren County was named after President Martin Van Buren, who held the highest office of the United States from 1827 until 1841.
White County was named for John White who was most likely the first settler in the White County area. He is buried in the Union Church graveyard near River Hill, White County, Tennessee. Last but not least, Bledsoe County was named for a Revoulutionary soldier by that surname. Mr. Bledsoe was killed about 1789 by Indians in Sumner County, Tennesse, which was his native home.
An act of the Tennessee State Legislature created Van Buren County in January of 1840. The county was made up mostly of level land and mountains, and more than half of the county is part of a range known as the Cumberland Mountains. The biggest part of the land within the county boundaries belongs to land and timber companies. Why? Well it is because the timber and coal are valuable natural resources and the state does not want them depleted in a rapid manner.
The soil of the county is a sandy loam, and with proper treatment has and will produce any crop a farmer might want to plant, but especially vegetables do well. Due to the average yearly rainfall of fifty inches the pastures are very green, and lush areas for livestock to graze.
The section of the state in which Van Buren County is located rests on a plateau that is about two thousand feet above sea levelo and is the reason that the summers are cool and the winters quite cold. The Cumberland and Appalachian Mountains extend from the northern portion of the state of Alabama toward the eastern portion of the United States. (REF: "Early History of Van Buren County" by Dorothy Cope, Van Buren Historical Society Quarterly, Vol. XVII, No. 1, p. 4)
Among the early settlers and our ancestors/relatives of Van Buren County, or those that were there when the county was formed in 1840 G. P. Cummings (Gabriel Penn Cummings), Joseph Cummings, Jr., Alfred Hill, Elijah Hill, George Sparkman & Hardy (Hardiman) Sparkman. In the following pages of this genealogy are the families of these men and their descendants, and in some cases ancestors.
In July of 1841 there was an enumeration of white males over the age of 21 years for Van Buren County, this was the second year of the countys' exsistence. Among the men were the following Sparkman's Bryant Sparkman ( Thomas Bryant born 1803 as Jr., would not have been 21 years of age), D. Sparkman (David?), Edmond Sparkman, two George Sparkman's, Hardy Sparkman (Hardiman), James Sparkman, John Sparkman, Lewis Sparkman, and William Sparkman. The remainder of the list reads like a Who's Who of Van Buren County prominent citizens as well as relatives of the Sparkman family.
In the Department of Cultural Resources Division of Archives and History for the State of North Carolina is the following recorded document. The following is a typewritten copy of the original copy sent to a descendant in 1982.

Probated July 1, 1816

(Note: Sephon is more than likely mispelled and should be session)

George and Patsy as she was known, built a home in Cold Holler, Tennessee and were buried in the Cold Holler Cemetary which was just across the road from their home. After they passed away their son Thomas Bryant lived on the farm. He sold the property to John Hollingsworth the last day of March, 1858 and bought two other farms just down the road at Stoney Point. Bryant, Eleanor, Solomon and daughter Eleanor are buried in the Cold Holler Cemetary along with George and Patsy.
In 1891 there was a G. W. Sparkman who paid taxes in Van Buren Co., Tennessee, this is undoubtedly George W. Sparkman, son of George and Patsy, and husband of Berthenia Goddard.

"Our Family & The Civil War"

There were four companies of Confederate Soldiers made up mostly of Van Buren County men. Many of these men were from surrounding counties but in the following the complete companies are given wherever possible and no attempt was made to separate them in the following information. The data on Murray's 22nd Tennessee Battalion, Company E, was taken mainly from TENNESSEANS IN THE CIVIL WAR, VOL II. Data on the 35th Tennessee ?Infantry REgiment was taken from MILITARY ANNALS OF TENNESSEE by Lindsley, where as information on the 16th Regiment, Company I was taken from CAMPAIGNS and BATTLES OF THE SIXTEENTH REGIMENT, TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS, by Thomas A. Head and the data on the Union Soldiers was obtained from the 1890 CIVIL WAR VETERANS CENSUS OF TENNESSEE by Sistler. Data was also extracted from military files, in the Tennessee State Library, TENNESSEANS IN THE CIVIL WAR., VOL. I & II, MUSTER ROLLS OF THE 35TH, COMPANY C, MY GRANDFATHERS DIARY by Carroll H. Clark and the 1860 Van Buren County Census.
Records for the 1st Confederate Calvary Regiment, Company H., were not found, as due to a supposed train wreck the records of this unit were lost in transport.
More information on some of the following companies is accessible, in that the files are available on some of the soldiers at the Tennessee State Archives in Nashville. There is a partial list of those who were killed or died in service, promotion and rank while in the service and ectera.

COMPANY E
The 22nd, also known as the 2nd and as Murray's Battalion Tennessee was composed of nine companies A to H and K. Companies F, G, H, and K had formerly been serving with or in the 4th (Murray's) Regiment Tennessee Cavaltry and they were transferred to this battalion when that regiment disbanded in January of 1863. The battalion was consolidated, temporarily only, with the 38th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry in 1863, however each company of the two separate organizations was mustered separately and under its original designation during the period covered by the consolidation. There was only one Sparkman in this unit, and that was W. R. Sparkman. W. R. was possibly William Reed Sparkman, however which one the author is not sure. Other members of this unit who are/were related to the Sparkman family are Joseph Cummings, Smith Denton, the three Dillion boys, the Grissoms', the Hillis's, to name a few. Most of the men were either kin or kin to kin.

COMPANY C

This particular company was successively named as Company 'C' Mountain Rifle Regiment Tennessee Volunteers; Cummings' Company and Company C, 5th Tennessee Regiment Provisional Army; and Company 'C', 35th Regiment Tennessee Infantry.
This regiment was brought into being on September 11th, 1861 and was accepted into the Confederacy on October 31, 1861. In the field the unit was known as the 5th Tennessee Regiment Provisional Army and as the Mountain Rifle Regiment Tennessee Volunteers, but officially designated as the 35th Regiment Tennessee Infantry by the A.I.G & ?O. Like other units it was consolidated with another unit, in this case the 48th (Nixon) Regiment Tennessee Infantry by S.O. No.3, Headquarters, Polk's Brigade, dated September 27, 1863, until the latter was transferred to the 48th (Voorhies') Regiment Tennessee Infantry by S.F.O. No.46, Headquarters, Army of Tennessee, dated July 14, 1864, but each company of the two organizations was mustered separately and under the original designation during the period covered by this consolidation.
About the 9th of April, 1865, the 4th, 5th, 19th, 24th, 31rst, 33rd, 35th, 38th, and 41rst Regiments of the Tennessee Infantry were combined to form the 3rd Consolidated Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry which was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, May 1, 1865. There were four Sparkman's listed on the muster rolls of this unit, namely Arthur Sparkman, George Sparkman, John Sparkman, and Thomas B. Sparkman.

Company I
During its' exsistence, this company was known by various names, Captain York's Company, Captain Randal's Company and Company 'I', 16th Regiment Tennessee Infantry.
The 16th Regiment Tennessee Infantry was organized June 10, 1861, and re-organized in May of 1862. On about April 10th, 1862, a number of the members of this regiment re-enlisted for the duration of the war in Captain P. H. McBride's Cavalry Company, which subsequently became Company "I", 4th (McLemore's) Regiment Tennessee Cavalry.
On the 9th of April, 1865, the 1st, 6th, 8th, 9th, 16th, 27th, 28th, and 34th Regiments Tennessee Infantr7y and the 24th Battalion Tennessee Sharp Shooters were consolidated and formed the 1st Consolidated Regiment Tennessee Infantry, which was disbanded or paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina on May 1, 1865. There were four Sparkman men in this unit, they were Elvin Sparkman, G. W. Sparkman, Nelson Sparkman and Thomas B. Sparkman.

I have researched in Van Zandt County, Texas, and Hardeman County, Tennessee, so I have copies of the estate files and marriage bonds from both counties. I'll do an inventory and send e-mail of what I have. Am I correct in that you are also descended from William Coleman Pirtle? His daughter, Mary Ann Pirtle Hubbard, is my ggg-grandmother. Mary Ann's only descendents are through her youngest daughter, Sallie Ann, since the other two daughters died before they were grown. Sallie Ann spent most of her adult years in Leon County, Texas, having relocated there from Van Zandt County after her marriage to Steve Copeland. I was born in Leon County in 1938 on my grandparents farm near Flynn. I have a 5-generation photo taken of me as a child with my mother, grandmother, g- grandmother, and gg-grandmother, Sallie Ann Hubbard Copeland Jones. Before sending to you, I need to update some files on the families of Mary Ann Pirtle Hubbard and her daughter, Sallie Ann. It may take a week or two, but this will force me to give the project some priority! Received: from WyattMJ@aol.com

[Pirtle.GED] From: James Pirtle To: Wanda Cronauer Date: Wednesday, January 27, 1999 10:39 PM Subject: Thomas Gregory Dear Wanda: I sent the following E-mail messages to Keith Purtell about Thomas Gregory. The first letter is as follows: Odell Walker of Kuttawa, KY, has provided me a very valuable piece of information from the Lyon County, KY Court Order Book 1, page 10, 24 April 1854. It reveals that Abigail Pirtle’s father, Thomas Gregory, was a reputed soldier of the Virginia Continental Line in the Revolutionary War, and that he died in Lyon County on June 10, 1814. His widow, Sally Gregory, died on March 7, 1842. Abigail, the wife of William Pirtle (the father of my grandfather's grandfather), is listed as an heir with four or perhaps more children. Although I knew that William Pirtle married Abigail Gregory, I knew nothing about her parents. Therefore, as I mention in the first paragraph of my article, I certainly could not have written our family history without the generous bits and pieces of information contributed by so many interested individuals. I certainly thank Mr. Walker, a retired school principal and Lyon County Historian, for this valuable piece of information, which the descendants of William Pirtle will appreciate knowing. This is the letter I sent Keith today: I found Thomas Gregory in the Revolutionary War Pension Records at the library. The following information is written exactly as it appears: Thomas, Sally, W8876, Cont & VA Line, Sol was b & raised in Amherst Co VA & he lived there at enl, he m Sally “Salley” Staples in the fall of 1787 in Amherst or Halifax Co VA & she was raised in Halifax Co VA & her father was dec’d when she m Sol, Sol later moved to Caldwell Co (later Lyon Co) KY & he lived there 10 Jun 1814 & wid d there 7 Mar 1842 or 17 Mar 1843 both dates shown leaving children; Samuel; Joseph & Thomas Gregory who was b about 1791 & served in the War of 1812 & in 1854 lived in Lyon Co KY, Abigail who m Wm. Pirtle & Mary Ann who m Samuel Henderson & she was living in 1854, other children shown were; Betsey who m Jacob Fowler, Jeremiah & John W. Gregory, a grandson John W. & a son of Sol’s son Thomas was aged 33 in 1854 a res of Lyon Co KY, Sol’s bro Jeremiah Gregory was mentioned as living during the Rev War & wid’s brother Joseph Staples was also referred to. It was in the 1950s when Maude Celeste Taylor remembered that Abigail's maiden name was Gregory, which I accepted without any doubt. However, it is nice that it can be confirmed that Jacob Pirtle's son William married Abigail Gregory whose father served in the Continental and Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War. Washington had no money to pay the soldiers, but they received land warrants in lieu of money. By settling in the new territories, they could take advantage of these land grants. This explains why so many settlers had fought in the Revolutionary War. In the listing of the Revolutionary War Service Records I could not pinpoint Thomas Gregory. After all, there were six Virginians with the name Thomas Gregory. Again, it is certainly nice to be looking for a name like Pirtle when doing genealogy research. I find it interesting that Halifax County is the county where John Pyrtle lived at the time of Abigail's birth in 1796. Rockingham County, NC, where John Jacob Pirkle lived, is across the state line. Amherst County is north of Lynchburg.
