Services: Melvin Leon Sparkman, 71, of Big Spring, died on Thursday, June 24, 2010, in a Lubbock hospital. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Friday, July 2, 2010 at the Nalley-Pickle and Welch Rosewood Chapel with Lay Minister Rose Dunn-Turner, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. Melvin Leon was born on January 29, 1939 in Olney, Texas. He was a master heavy equipment mechanic. During 1970-1976, Melvin Leon worked on the ITT Pipeline in Alaska where he took many photographs of Alaska; a few of which were printed in National Geographic. He was employed with Zachry Corporation at the time his illness began. Melvin Leon served in the Korean War.

He enjoyed traveling, photographing, sightseeing, dancing, fishing and hunting. Most of all he loved God's creation and those closest to him.

He is survived a son, Stuart Steven Sparkman of Arizona; three daughters, Elizabeth Ann Underwood of Alabama, Elaine Sparkman of Washington, and Ronda Heath of Texas; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; fourteen brothers and sisters, Martha Barbie of Apple Valley, California, Louise Travao of Stephenville, Wayne Sparkman of Pecos, Rodney Sparkman Jr. of Utah, Patricia Sparkman of Texas, Jimmy Sparkman of Alabama, Cynthia Chavez, Amando Esparza, Mary Franco, Alfonso Esparza, Virgina Jones, Jesse Esparza, Sylvia Hernandez, and Susan Reyes all of Texas; and his lifelong friend, confidant and caregiver, Dora Dunn. Melvin Leon was a lifelong mentor to Lucero Dunn of Austin, TX Brodie Lee Dunn of Midland, Cherish Turner, and Chelsae Turner of Austin, TX.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rodney Sparkman; his mother, Lacy Lucille White-Sparkman and his step-mother, Francis Sparkman.
