Sparkman Coat-of-Arms or crest from J.B. Rietstap's "Armorial General" 1884 and Burke's "General Armory", 1844.

Ó 2000 - 2005 Rodney Sparkman Jr. and assigns.  All rights reserved.

I (Rod Sparkman) created the crest above on July 27, 1999 based on my research.  Some may agree or disagree with my rendition.  That is their God-given right.  Artistic license is the right of the artist, however.  Isn't America wonderful?

 Family of:                  Sparkman and Sparkmann

 Authority:                   J.B. Rietstap's "Armorial General" 1884 and Burke's "General Armory", 1844.

Arms:                         Gules (red), a red lion rampant, or, "gold". (These are the vertical lines)

Crest:                         On a mound (grass) vert (green) a deer (lying down or
standing) proper of natural color with horns gold

Motto:                         None recorded, but one branch used Esse Quam Videri (Rather to be than to seem)

Notes:                       The arms described above, as borne by the family of Sparkman or Sparkmann, of Essex , Plymouth and London , England as far back as the year 1577. Some branches of Norfol, Suffok and Surrey , England . It is said by some of the present generation that two or three of the Sparkman brothers came from England or Ireland and settled in Bertie County , North Carolina . Their names George, James, and Edward and others are recorded in N.C. showing that all three fought in the Revolutionary war.[1]

According to "Guilliams Display of Heraldry", 1660 edit, the color gules (red on family arms, denotes military fortitude and magnanimity (greatness of mind, noble, etc.); gold or yellow signifies "generosity" and "elevation of mind"; vert (green) indicated "hope" and "joy".

"History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon."
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769 - 1821)

[1] These are the notes that were type-written by my Aunt Lorena Sparkman, wife of George Sparkman.
