I n February of this year, we found out our Grandmother, Frances Sparkman, had an abnormal growth on her throat. After about a month of diagnostic testing, it was discovered she was suffering from Lymphoma. After a series of surgeries, she suffered a mini-stroke in June and was soon put on life support. As Dad’s sisters rallied around Grandma, their concern she might not live grew. The next day, Dad, Mom, and I hopped on a plane to Midland, Texas. The experiences that followed are sweet and spiritual. I, Emma, cried as I watched all 12 of my Grandmother’s children and their families hold hands in a circle to pray for my Grandmother’s release from pain. A week of decisions about life support and hospice followed in tandem with a week of forgiveness, love, support, and comfort. In the presence of four generations of family members Grandma passed from this life on June 20, 2007. od: With muscles strengthened and tires pumped, Dad joined thousands of other marathon fanatics at the world renowned St. George, Utah Marathon. With temperatures below freezing, the task of wheeling 26.2 miles was a daunting one. In triumph, Dad crossed the finish line in 2 hours and 3 minutes and was yet again a 3rd place finalist. Way to go! | | | | Camille:When Centerville’s new library was built, Mom saw an opportunity to be closer to home. Though she would miss her friendships with patrons and co-workers at the Central Branch, she knew it was the right decision. She’s found pleasure in serving the community around her and delights in spoiling the little ones with treats and fun books to read. She wanted me to add that she’s let her gray hair grow out!! She’s all natural.
| | | | J: R.J. began the year of graduations as he walked across Weber State University’s stage to receive a Bachelors degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. He has used the degree at different institutions such as ARUP doing microbiology tests and University of Utah Hospital helping determine blood type for organ donation. He is really excited about his new fish tank and loves to show off the pictures of his new “babies" meaning...his fish. He and his wife, Ann, still reside in Layton, Utah. Ann is going to school to become a CNA in hopes of getting into nursing school. | | | | Emma: I, Emma, (23) currently serve as the University of Utah’s lab director for Emergency First Aid, a teaching assistant for Emergency Medical Technician Basic course, and an EMT for stadium and campus events. When I’m not taking care of cuts, bruises, and intoxicated individuals, I also work at a place called This is the Place Heritage Park. During the summer I was Miss Emma in the pioneer school house and this last month I was a spooker for the Haunted Village. While working at the village I tore my calf muscle and had to go to the ER. I am currently in physical therapy to help with the healing process. In addition to these activities I am the president of the LDS THETA sorority and oversee activities for 35 girls. I look forward to working in the ER at University of Utah’s Hospital this next spring. | | | | Jacob: Elder Sparkman (20) has had a few adventures in his 15 months of se rving an LDS Mission in Orlando, Florida. Earlier this year, he was struck by a car while riding his bike at University of Central Florida. Two days later, while riding another Elder’s bike, he flew over his handle bars and landed with his head on the curb. After 9 hours in the ER, he was lucky to have not suffered worse injuries. Just last month, he was able to baptize a prospective member. | | | | tephanie: Stephanie (19) graduated from Bountiful High School in June with high honors and citizenship. She received many scholarships and, through the process of prayer and fasting, decided to go the College of Eastern Utah in Price, Utah. She lives in the dorms and enjoys the fact that class is a five minute walk away. She is studying Mass Communications. She serves as the ward Relief Society Secretary and the Institute Womens’ Association Ruth Chapter President. She has also had many adventures with all the different men who take her out.
